Welcome to 2012! It’s hard to believe that we are in our new calendar year.  The time has really been flying by.

In December we started working with fractions.  We will continue  with that same unit this month, and we’ll  also begin working on money skills.  Naming fractions and counting coins are our two Math TLP goals for January.  In order to get a “head start” on money, help your child learn the names and values of a penny, nickel, dime, and quarter.

One of our new TLP goal areas for January is understanding and using plurals correctly. We will also be reading more stories that focus on our theme “Around Town: Neighborhood and Community.” This month’s Science lessons will focus on rocks, soil, and fossils.

Please watch for information from your child’s teacher regarding field trips to Albertson’s.

Winter break is almost here, but we are still very busy!

Look for report cards on Friday, December 2.

This month we are having lots of fun studying all about “Second Grade Economics.”  We are learning about resources and raw materials, producers, consumers, and how food gets to our table.  We are working on a Google Docs slide show to finish our unit of study.

All second grade classes will be having a cookie exchange to finish out the year.  Your child’s teacher will be sending home more information.

We wish all of our families a happy and safe winter vacation!  Don’t forget to keep reading, reading, reading over the holidays!

Welcome back to school!   We hope the October break was wonderful and that everyone is ready for all that November brings.

This month we will be assessing students in preparation for report cards that will be sent home in December.
Our monthly goals will focus on double-digit addition, measurement, descriptive writing, and knowing how to use a dictionary, thesaurus, and atlas.  We will also continue with “how to” writing.

We will be having a Food Group Feast right before our Thanksgiving break which starts on Wednesday, November 23.  Watch for upcoming information about this event.

The Second Grade Team

Our two-week break is here, and a big thank you goes out to all of the families who helped or supplied goodies for our fun second grade Halloween celebration! A great time was had by all!

Students will return to school on Monday, October 31.  New homework packets will be sent home on that day.  Please be sure your child reads daily during our break.  Addition and subtraction practice would be very helpful, as well.

We’ll see you  on the 31st, and we hope you all have a safe and wonderful two-week break!  Enjoy your family time!

October is here!

The second grade team would like to thank you all for the wonderful attendance we had for student conferences.  Ocean Knoll is very proud of the strong parent support that we have, and we know you will continue that throughout the year!

We only have a short time left before our October break, but we have lots to do in that time.

We have just finished our math unit on place value, and we have worked hard to learn tens and ones.  We will also be working with Geometry in October.   Our “Silly Stories” theme in reading is almost complete, and we’ll be taking the test on all of the skills we have learned with those stories.

All second grade students will be taking a field trip to Sunshine Gardens before the break.  If you can help by driving, please notify your child’s teacher.  We appreciate your help!

Please have your child  practice and review the math facts for addition and subtraction to 20, and continue nightly reading.  Those two things make a big difference in student progress.

Dear Families,

August is almost over and we are getting ready for our first full month of school in September! We are looking forward to meeting with you all during conference week which is scheduled for Sept. 19-23.  At that time we will be reviewing our initial assessments and setting your child’s goals for the coming year.

If you have not already done so,  please return the conference scheduling form that was sent home with your child’s homework packet.  We will confirm your conference time when the forms have been returned.

Dear Families,

We had a great first week of second grade and we’re looking forward to a wonderful year!

This Thursday, August 25, we will be having our annual “Back to School Night” presentations.  Parent meetings will be held from 5:40-6:20 in your child’s classroom.  Following the presentations we will all gather in the auditorium for a welcome from Mrs. Lopez.
